The Komodo Guide certification program is an independent audit framework that evaluates licensed Komodo National Park tour operators against documented criteria covering Indonesian government licensing, ASITA membership, operational safety, fleet standards, responsible tourism practices, and conservation compliance. Operators awarded certification are listed in this public registry. Full criteria are published at /certification/criteria/.

How the Certification Works

The program operates three certification tiers. Tier 1 confirms baseline legal compliance: a valid SIUP (business license), KTP, and active Komodo National Park operating permit. Tier 2 adds safety and operational requirements: vessel survey certificates, licensed guides, and evidence of conservation-fee compliance. Tier 3 — the highest tier — additionally requires professional association membership (ASITA or equivalent), demonstrated multi-vessel capacity, and a documented responsible-tourism policy. Each application is reviewed by an audit panel that includes at least one independent reviewer with no commercial relationship to the applicant. Where the applicant is a sister brand of komodoguide.org, the commercial interest is recused and an independent reviewer takes the lead scoring role. Details are at /certification/methodology/.

Certifications are valid for twelve months from the award date. All certified operators are subject to a re-audit before renewal. A certification may be withdrawn at any time if the operator no longer meets the criteria or if a substantiated complaint is upheld. See recusal and complaint procedures.

Any licensed Komodo National Park tour operator may apply for certification. There is no fee to apply. The audit process is document-based and takes approximately 30 business days from submission of a complete application. Operators are assessed against the published criteria only — affiliation with komodoguide.org is not a factor and confers no advantage.

Yes. All three currently certified operators — Komodo Explorer, Trip Komodo Tour, and Boat Komodo Trip — are sister brands of komodoguide.org, all operated under PT. Komodo Explorer Indonesia. This affiliation is disclosed in full on the Disclosures page and on each operator's certification profile. All three were assessed under full commercial recusal: an all-independent panel conducted the audit with no participation from komodoguide.org staff or directors.

How can I verify a KGCO certification badge?

Visit the operator's certification profile page on this site (linked from each registry entry). The profile page displays the tier, award date, expiry date, criteria met, and audit panel composition. To verify independently, you can email [email protected] to request confirmation of an operator's certification status and the identity of the independent reviewer who conducted the assessment.

How can other Komodo operators apply for certification?

Any licensed Komodo National Park tour operator may apply. Read the criteria at /certification/criteria/, then submit your documents to [email protected] with subject "KGCO Application — [Company Name] — Tier [1/2/3]". There is no application fee — the assessment fee (IDR 1,500,000 to 5,000,000 depending on tier) is payable only after the panel confirms a complete submission. Affiliation with komodoguide.org confers no advantage in the assessment process.

What happens if a certified operator no longer meets the criteria?

If a credible complaint is received or a renewal audit finds non-compliance, the operator receives a Notice of Concern and has 20 business days to respond. The panel then makes one of three determinations: Compliant, Corrective Action Required, or Revocation. Revoked certifications are displayed as "Revoked" in this registry and recorded permanently in the public revocation log on the Disclosures page, including the criterion at issue.
