Biology and Identification

The dugong is a large, slow-moving marine mammal with a fusiform (torpedo-shaped) body and a distinctive fluked tail resembling that of a whale rather than the paddle-like tail of manatees — the tail shape is the most reliable field identification character when other features are unclear. Their closest living relative, Hydrodamalis gigas (Steller's sea cow), was hunted to extinction by 1768, leaving Dugong dugon as the only species in the family — a sobering evolutionary isolation that underscores the species' conservation importance. Evolutionary Origins and the Sirenian Body Plan

Sirenians evolved from land-dwelling ancestors approximately 50 million years ago and share a common origin with elephants and hyraxes — a relationship confirmed by molecular phylogeny. The dugong's forelimbs have been modified into flexible pectoral flippers used for steering and slow-speed manoeuvring; there are no hind limbs. Siaba Besar

Siaba Besar is the most commonly cited site for dugong presence within the park. The island's eastern side hosts the park's most extensive accessible seagrass beds — meadows of Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, and Halodule uninervis, all preferred dugong forage species. The area is also a green turtle feeding ground, reflecting the high seagrass productivity here. Dugong presence at Siaba Besar is documented in park records and in reports from experienced dive guides, but encounters remain occasional rather than routine. Most sightings involve brief surface views or glimpses of a large grey form moving through the seagrass before disappearing into deeper water or adjacent channels.

Other Potential Habitat

The broader coastal zone around the Banta Island area and sheltered bays on the north coast of Rinca may also support occasional dugong use, based on seagrass habitat suitability. These areas are rarely visited by tourist boats and have not been systematically surveyed for dugong presence. Ecology and Behaviour

Seagrass Grazing

Dugongs are obligate seagrass grazers. Unlike green turtles, which crop the leaf blades, dugongs typically uproot entire plants, leaving distinctive "feeding trails" — furrows in the sediment where the seagrass rhizomes have been extracted. This rooting behaviour can, at low to moderate intensity, actually stimulate seagrass growth by aerating sediments and promoting the regeneration of nitrogen-rich young shoots. At very high dugong densities, overgrazing can temporarily reduce seagrass cover; at Komodo's levels of dugong presence, this is not a concern. A large adult dugong may consume 25–40 kg of seagrass per day — roughly equivalent to its own body weight in fresh plant material every 10–14 days.

Solitary and Social Behaviour

Dugongs are generally solitary or found in pairs (typically mother and calf). Large aggregations — "herds" of hundreds documented in Shark Bay, Australia — do not occur in Komodo. This extremely low reproductive rate means that dugong populations have almost no capacity to absorb elevated adult mortality: even a small increase in human-caused deaths can drive a population into long-term decline.

Boat Strikes

Vessel collision is one of the leading causes of dugong mortality in high-boat-traffic areas. Dugongs swim slowly, spend significant time near the surface, and may not react quickly enough to approaching vessels. Propeller injuries are frequently documented in stranded or recovered dugongs throughout the Indo-Pacific. The growing tourist boat traffic in Komodo's waters — particularly around Siaba Besar — makes this an increasingly relevant concern. Establishing and enforcing low-speed zones over seagrass areas is the primary mitigation measure.

Incidental Capture in Fishing Gear

Dugongs drown when entangled in gillnets or seine nets. Like sea turtles, they must surface to breathe; net entanglement prevents this. Although dugong-targeted hunting is now illegal in Indonesia, incidental bycatch in artisanal fishing gear operating in seagrass habitats continues to pose a threat.
